Tips to Finding Your Purpose in Life

Finding your purpose in life can feel overwhelming, especially in this world so focused on expectations and judgement. But a purpose isn’t always a big career or announcement to the world—it can be quiet, simple, and deeply personal to you. If you’ve been feeling disconnected, uncertain, or lost, here are some simple tips and guides to help you find your authentic purpose.

  1. Find what excites you: hobbies or activities that you love where time seems to fly by and you feel alive.
  2. Reconnect with your inner child and ask yourself what did you love doing as a kid? Creating art, reading and writing, learning about nature, singing and dancing, experimenting in the kitchen, recording videos, playing in the water. From that pure passion, contemplate how you can express that in your life now.
  3. Reflect on times when you felt genuine fulfillment in life. When did you feel aligned and the most proud of yourself?
  4. Think of moments when you had an impact on others. What did others seek your advice or help with? Did it bring you joy? Does it feel like the universe is guiding you towards this?
  5. Make a list of your skills and strengths. Your purpose might be hiding in plain sight–in something that comes naturally to you.
  6. Say YES to new experiences. You might just find a passion in something totally new.
  7. List your regrets. Learn from them. Understand what you would have done differently, helps you grasp what truly matters to you
  8. Identify people you envy and ask yourself why? Jealously is often a reflection of what you desire.
  9. Stop seeking external validation. Not everyone is rooting for your success, so don’t be so influenced by society or even loved ones. Value your gut instinct. Listen to your inner voice.
  10. Give yourself a break from your routines. Step outside of the same patterns and give yourself a break (like a gap year effect). Open your mind to new avenues and possibility.
  11. Ask yourself how you want to be remembered at the end of your life.
  12. Find new perspectives. Read new books, talk to new people, find new people to look up to. Step outside your complacency (comfort zone).

Have compassion with yourself. This discovery could take some time. Self discovery is a journey just like everything in life. Don’t give up or beat yourself up if you don’t find it instantly.

You don’t have to save the world or be the next Picasso. You don’t have to be famous or wealthy to have a meaningful life. Your purpose could be to swim in the ocean, cook good foods, and be a kind friend. You are always good enough. Enjoy your life.
